The kingdom of God in the Old Testament

Good News

  • God promised to Abraham that his ‘seed’ would inherit the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession (Genesis 17:3-8, see Galatians 3:16).

  • King David was promised that he would have a ‘seed’ who would reign on his throne and possess his kingdom for ever (1 Chronicles 17:11-14, see Luke 1:32-33, Isaiah 9:6-7).

  • God spoke to the last king of Israel, before the nation was taken captive by the Babylonians, saying that the kingship was to be overturned ‘until he shall come whose right it is and I will give it him’(Ezekiel 21:25-27).

  • All of the Old Testament prophets spoke of a future time when God’s kingdom will be established on Earth (e.g. Isaiah 2:1-4, Daniel 7:27, Numbers 14:21, Isaiah 24:23).
